Original artists often slip under the radar of the Indonesian music scene, as many bands and singers trade in on their looks rather than their talent. But those willing to dig deeper will find the country has an abundance of unique artists, who often attract the attention of overseas music lovers before they manage to penetrate the local market.

SimakDialog is one such group. Founded in 1993, the band combines contemporary jazz with traditional Sundanese music to create an original sound that has brought it international recognition.

This year it have been selected as the only band from Asia to play at the annual jazz trade fair and festival Jazzahead in Bremen, Germany.

“People in other countries have finally realized that there are many great musicians in Indonesia,” said the band’s frontman, Riza Arshad.

Scheduled to take place from April 28 to May 1, Jazzahead is one of the world’s largest jazz gatherings. The event is a melting pot of people from all over the world involved in the jazz industry, including musicians, media representatives, recording companies, festival organizers and promoters.

Last year, Jazzahead welcomed more than 3,000 people.

Riza said people in Western countries were now searching for alternative music from foreign countries, including Indonesia.

“They are looking for different and unique sounds,” he said, adding that musicians had to work hard to respond to this demand by exploring their own originality.

The keyboardist took on this challenge with the other members of his trio, bassist Aditya Pratama and celebrated guitarist Tohpati Ario Hutomo, by inviting three Sundanese musicians — kendang players Endang Ramdan and Erlan Suwardana, and Cucu Kurnia, who plays Sundanese toy — to inject a traditional sound into their music.

The band has released five albums since coming together in 1993. The last two albums, “Patahan” (“Fracture”) and “Demi Masa” (“For the Sake of Time”), were recorded and distributed by American label Moonjune Records.

Under the international label, SimakDialog has received at least 200 positive reviews from music critics worldwide, helping to raise the profile of Indonesian music worldwide.

Riza said music lovers around the world had long been familiar with the tabla, a percussion instrument from India. But if they knew what the Sundanese kendang could do, he said, they might consider replacing the tabla with the Indonesian equivalent.

Riza said the kendang, a drum from West Java with two surfaces, could produce unique sounds by “manipulating the rhythm.”

SimakDialog has often been labeled an ethnic band due to the distinctive sound of the kendang in its music. Riza, however, is quick to dismiss the label.

“We call our music contemporary,” he said, adding that the band didn’t want to get pigeonholed in the traditional music category.

“It’s not really about how we play the kendang, but how to play the music deeply,” he said.

The band’s self-described style is “Karawitan jazz,” or jazz inspired by traditional Javanese music.

Project manager Agus Setiawan Basuni said SimakDialog’s success was a sign of the rise of jazz music in Indonesia.

Agus, who represents 12 other Indonesian jazz bands, said plenty of international jazz acts had already visited the country, so now it was time for local musicians to venture out and perform overseas. He said recent developments in jazz in Indonesia were promising, with more jazz festivals being held not only in Jakarta but also on other islands, including Sumatra and Sulawesi.

“We hope that more Indonesian jazz musicians will follow on to play at the international level,” Agus said.

According to Riza, SimakDialog’s upcoming performance at the Jazzahead festival is a good first step.

“As the only group from Asia to perform at such a prestigious event, this performance will be very important for the future development of Indonesian jazz,” the classically trained keyboardist said.

SimakDialog is scheduled to give a 45-minute performance on the first day of the event. As the day’s closing act, the band will play alongside acts from Australia, Brazil and Canada.

Guitarist Tohpati said SimakDialog had not been doing anything special to prepare for the event, but said the band was looking forward to playing live in Germany and sharing its music with an international audience.

Riza said his goal for the performance was simple. “I just want to inspire people through my music because I am always inspired by other musicians too.”

Sri Wahyuni, The Jakarta Post, Yogyakarta

Delayed due to last year’s deadly Merapi eruptions, a one-day jazz festival featuring national performers will be held in Yogyakarta on Saturday.

Called “Ngayogjazz” or Yogyakarta jazz, the event will take place from afternoon to midnight in the yard of noted artist Djoko Pekik’s house in Sembungan sub-district, Kasihan, Bantul, Yogyakarta.

The event, the fourth since it was first launched in 2007, had previously been scheduled for Nov. 20.

“The eruptions of Mount Merapi postponed it and now we will have it this Saturday,” Ngayogjazz 2011 director and noted musician Djaduk Ferianto told a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

The world’s most active volcano, situated on the border of Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces, started erupting last October, continuing until November and killing nearly 400 people and displacing a half million others in the two affected provinces.

This year’s event takes the Javanese philosophy of mangan ora mangan ngumpul, which refers to the importance of togetherness in times of happiness and sadness among the Javanese community.

“This is a saying that, according to our interpretation, carries a message about the need to foster solidarity whatever the conditions. Such a spirit has been proven effective especially in difficult times,” he said.

Djaduk was referring to the solidarity of people in the region during the eruptions, in which they independently and voluntarily provided survivors with meals.

“No one told them to do so. They did so because of the spirit of togetherness. This is what is special about the region,” said Djaduk, who is also a younger brother of noted monologue performer Butet Kertaradjasa.

This spirit is said to have inspired the attending jazz performers to agree to perform for free.

“Visitors will not be required to pay for entrance tickets as all is performed for free. Everyone can just join and enjoy the performance together.

“This is indeed not a festival. We prefer to call this a gathering, a meeting forum for everyone to join, including performers, audience, locals, artists and even vendors of traditional foods,” said Aji Wartono, another member of the event organizer.

The event will present not only jazz music performances but also various traditional performances by local performers.

During the event, a special jazz album presenting repertoires adapted from Javanese traditional songs will also be launched. Titled Sesarengan (Togetherness), the album was produced jointly by Ngayogjazz and the Jogja Jazz Community.

The singers, musicians and jazz bands confirmed to perform at the event include Glenn Fredly, Iga Mawarni, Syaharani, Chanda Darusman, Tohpati Bertiga, Jogja Jazz Community, Bali Jazz Community, Ngisor Ringin Jazz Community (Semarang) and Gugun Blues Shelter.

Syaharani, who will perform for his third time at Ngayogjazz, said she enjoyed performing at the event and considered it the cosiest and most relaxed jazz event she had ever participated in.

“Everyone from any genre of music can come here, as there are no limitations at all,” Syaharani said, adding that she especially liked the event’s traditional ethnic parade.

“It’s really interesting,” she said.

Last October 2010, Java Festival Production (JFP) has successfully held its last event for the year. Nonetheless, it is an annual ritual that the JFP team in Simprug immediately started working on AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2011. In truth, the preparation for the festival has been going on year-round, yet preparations begin to become more intense with the arrival of December.

AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2011 is the seventh edition of Indonesia’s pride of a jazz festival. Music enthusiasts (especially from the jazz genre) make sure that they mark their schedule on 4, 5 and 6 March 2011 as the days when the world’s largest jazz festival is held. The venue: JIExpo Kemayoran.

Due to Attend: Jazz Legends>
This year, JFP successfully invited a number of world jazz legends, some of which will be coming to Indonesia’s premier jazz festival for the first time. The legends that had been here previously promise never-been-performed musical experiences.

After six year of incessant endeavor, Santana finally agreed to perform at AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2011. To make it even more phenomenal, Santana will be performing in two special shows: on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5. Santana’s ‘visit’ to Jakarta is part of the “Guitar Heaven 2011 Tour”. It is expected that Santana will perform the band’s classic songs, including those featured in “The Supernatural: Legacy Edition” album.

George Benson is a name bound to draw significant crowd. Although he has performed on a number of occasions in Jakarta, this would be the first time that George Benson will be performing at AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival. He will be performing in two formats (both Special Show): George Benson Greatest Hits and George Benson Tribute to Nat King Cole, in which he will be collaborating with an Indonesian orchestra to pay tribute to the legendary singer and pianist.

Due to perform at the festival is hits maker Kenny Loggins, a Special Show. Kenneth Clark Loggins is not only a notable songwriter, but also acknowledged pop singer. A Grammy Award winner (1980) for “Best Male Vocal”, his fans are from all over the world. His songs are the signature soundtrack to classic movies such as “Caddyshack”, “Footloose”, “Top Gun” and “Over the Top”.

There are two legendary jazz names worthy of highlighting that are due to perform in March 2011. The first is Charlie Haden, a double-bass player who will be flying all the way to Indonesia with his quartet. Haden has won three Grammy Awards, the “Jazz Educator of the Year” from Los Angeles Jazz Society and a “Lifetime Achievement Award” from Bassplayer magazine.

The other legend is Joey DeFrancesco, the best organist of the decade. The Hammond B3 specialist is a most acknowledged jazz musician with an unparallel talent. He had his first show at the age of 10. By the time he was 17, he was already recruited by jazz giant Miles Davis.

Furthermore, for the first time, Bob James, Harvey Mason, Nathan East and Chuck Loeb will perform as Fourplay at AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival. Ever since it was announced at www.javajazzfestival.com that the foursome would perform at the festival, fans incessantly inquire exactly on what dates Fourplay would grace the stage of the festival. For the 7th edition of the festival, for the first time, Fourplay will perform with their latest line-up.

Returning for the second time at the festival is Roy Ayers. For the 2011 edition of the festival, Roy Ayers will collaborate with Robert Glasper Experience. It can be said that Roy Ayers is one of the pioneers of modern jazz. The collaboration heightens further in ‘coolness’ with the presence of rapper Pete Rock.

When it was announced that Maria Schneider has confirmed her attendance at AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2011, a number of Indonesian musicians were thoroughly thrilled. Without a doubt, Maria Schneider is one of the world’s best jazz songwriters and arrangers. She has collaborated and performed with various orchestra and jazz ensembles from various countries. Definitely a performance that should not be missed.

Sondre Lerche would be the musicians that cater beautifully to the youth market of AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2011. The Norwegian singer is also a hit in Europe and the US. Also a treat for the younger crowd, Rasmus Faber & RaFa Orchestra and also Jamie Lidell.

Hailing from Leeds, Corinne Bailey Rae is one of the finest singers (and guitarists) in the UK. She has won a number of awards, including some awards for her latest album, “The Sea”, which won “Best R&B Album of the Year” from Soul and Jazz Awards. The same institution also crowned her as “Best Artist of the Year Act Soul/R&B” in 2010.

Also in the roster are Indra Lesmana, Barry Likumahuwa and Sandy Winarta due to perform modern jazz numbers. It will be full of surprises!

The Lounge: Jazz Hotspot in North Jakarta

There’s no need to argue: When it comes to the nightlife experience, Jakarta offers many possibilities for those who want to go out, meet their friends, hang out and have a good time. As a South Jakarta resident, however, I tend to stay in or close to my neighborhood. My preferred bars and cafes are in Kuningan, Kebayoran Baru and Kemang, and Central Jakarta is usually as far afield as I go. I choose those places mostly out of convenience, and to save money, since I normally get around by taxi. That’s why, when my cousin invited me to check out a jazz lounge in Mangga Dua, my initial reaction was, “Mangga Dua? That’s so far away.”

But then I thought, why not try something new? So there we were on Friday night, in the back of a taxi making our way through Jakarta’s traffic jungle to Le Grandeur Hotel in the northern part of the city. The first thing that caught my eye in the bright and sparkling lobby was a poster of Ireng Maulana, one of Indonesia’s most famous jazz musicians. He was scheduled to play in The Lounge, which just happened to be our destination that night.

Located on the ground floor of the hotel, The Lounge offers live jazz music daily. Mondays through Saturday, a jazz band takes the stage, while things quiet down a bit on Sunday evenings, with just a lone jazz pianist in charge of entertaining guests.

“When we came up with the concept for The Lounge, we thought about establishing a venue for our guests who enjoy jazz music,” said Yudi Yahya, the food and beverage manager at Le Grandeur. “In North Jakarta, there wasn’t any place that offered only jazz music, and we are still the only one. That makes it unique.”

The Lounge’s reputation as a swinging jazz venue has been cemented by the long list of celebrated artists who have performed there: Tompi, Maliq & D’Essentials, Glenn Fredly and Ireng Maulana, who since November 2009 has performed every Friday night.

In addition to being the only jazz venue in the area, The Lounge has a unique interior design, which keeps both the eyes and ears occupied.

The circular bar, manned by bartenders dressed in black suits, sits in the middle of the room, while waitresses wearing peach-colored blouses deliver drinks and food. Guests can sit either at the bar, in comfortable red-cushioned chairs, or they can opt for a table, which are also circular and can seat up to six people.

But the most impressive feature of The Lounge is undoubtedly the elevated stage on top of the bar — the heart of the whole venue. It offers space for at least four musicians and their instruments, and thanks to its position, allows the artists to easily interact with the audience.

In a separate room, there are two pool tables for those who want to take a break from the music or simply are in the mood for a game. The TV screens on the walls air sports events.

In addition to the entertainment, The Lounge also looks after the stomachs of its guests.

“We don’t offer heavy meals, but focus more on light snacks,” Yudi said. “When we created the menu, I was thinking of and inspired by Spanish tapas.

The cocktails in The Lounge are named after popular songs. Drinks and food are both reasonably priced.

After enjoying Ireng Maulana’s first and second sets, and shooting a couple of games of pool, my cousin and I decided to head for home. The friendly staff at Le Grandeur called a taxi for us, and only 30 minutes later we were sitting on the terrace of my house. It turns out The Lounge is not that far away after all, and more than that, it is definitely worth another visit.

For five years, Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival (2005 – 2009) was held at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC). It was a deeply memorable period for us, and the visitors of Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival.

We surely still remember that it was in JCC that we first witnessed a festival which would later establish itself as one of the best and largest in the world, a festival that is the pride of Indonesians. Moreover, the gargantuan jazz festival is the product of Indonesian young people’s hard work.

For the first and last time, we had the opportunity to catch “The Godfather of Soul”, James Brown, in action. Our hearts swelled with pride as we saw Indonesian talents sharing the stages with international artists.

For five years, Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival provided an abundant of treat for music lovers (especially favoring the jazz genre) from Indonesia and abroad with the sparkling stars of the jazz constellation, such as Tania Maria, George Duke, Ivan Lins, Bob James, Joshua Redman, Ron Carter, Sergio Mendes, Sadao Watanabe, Jeff Lorber, Kurt Elling, The Manhattan Transfer, Michael Paulo, Marcus Miller, Jeff Kashiwa, Lisa Ono, Incognito, Tetsuo Sakurai, Diane Reeves, New York Voices, Renee Olstead, Terumasa Hino, John Scofield, Harvey Mason, Eldar, Dave Weckl, David Garfield, Ron King Bag Band, Patti Austin, Isao Suzuki, David Benoit, Simon Phillips, Jamie Cullum, and many more. There were also the beyond jazz musicians who proved to be popular all around the globe: Babyface, Jason Mraz, Chaka Khan, the “The Godfather of Funk” George Clinton, Alex Ligertwood, Bobby Caldwell and Peabo Bryson.

Furthermore, we were also fortunate to witness Indonesian musicians who were the icons of jazz (and jazzy) music such as Bubi Chen, Benny Mustafa van Diest, Benny Likumahuwa, Margie Segers, Oele Pattiselanno, Jopie Item, Ireng Maulana, Kiboud Maulana, Jeffrey Tahalele, Yance Manusama, Tjut Nyak Deviana Daudsjah, Ermy Kulit, Elfa Secioria, Indra Lesmana, Pra Budi Dharma, Ruth Sahanaya, Dwiki Dharmawan, Adjierao, Cendy Luntungan, Glen Dauna, Glen Fredly, Bambang Nugroho, Tompi, Maliq & D’Essentials, Dira, to the promising future of Indonesian music Ayla Rao, Rafi and Zefanya.

We Relocated Because We Care

Since 2008, Peter F. Gontha, founder of Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival and Chairman of Java Festival Production, already began to consider relocating Indonesia’s pride of a jazz festival to a larger area. JIExpo Kemayoran is the only representative venue in Jakarta, and Indonesia, to hold an event with multiple stages, hundreds of shows and tens of thousands of visitors.

Peter F. Gontha and the line-up of Java Festival Production became more assured with their decision to relocate Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival to JIExpo Kemayoran having seen the overflow of visitors in 2009. Approximately 30,000 people flocked to JCC per day, packing JCC solid with the visitors of Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2009, that year sponsored by AXIS.

All people present at AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2009 found it troublesome to move around JCC. The air was humid and seemed lacking ventilation. In such condition, the comfort and safety of the people attending the festival might be compromised. Java Festival Production desires and continues to actualize safety and comfort of all visitors of the next AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival. Hence, the relocation of AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival to JIExpo Kemayoran in 2010.

The Sparkles of the Jazz Constellation

Similar to its last five years, AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010 will also showcase the sparkling talents of Indonesian and international artists. Due to perform, among which, are Tohpati, Bubi Chen, Indro Hardjodikoro, Oele Pattiselanno, Jeffrey Tahalele, Jakarta Broadway Team, Andre Hehanusa, Ligro Trio, Idang Rasjidi, Syaharani, Elfa?s Bossas, Aksan dan Titi Sjuman, RAN, Barry Likumahuwa, Soulvibe, Dewa Budjana, Gugun Blues Shelter, Opustre Soul Big Band, Lala Suwages, Ecoutez, Notturno and talented young pianist David Manuhutu.

Equally enthralling and diverse international musicians will also showcase their skills. Serious jazz twists will be performed by renowned jazz musicians such as Hubert Laws, Randy Brecker and Bill Evans accompanied by Steve Lukather (guitarist of Toto), renowned blues guitarist Robben Ford and Darry Jones (bassist of The Rolling Stones), George Duke, Christian McBride, David Murray, Carl Allen, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Roy Hargrove. The world’s best jazz vocal group The Manhattan Transfer is due to return for the second year, due to perform standards with the big band, and also a session where they perform pieces by jazz maestro Chick Corea.

For those preferring a more subtle jazz music, do not miss Bob James, Michael Paulo, Eric Marienthal, Everette Harp, Chieli Minucci, Mindy Abair, Jessy J, Lee Ritenour, Karen Briggs and Breakestra.

The Cuban Jazz, Latin Jazz and Brazilian Jazz numbers performed by Arturo O’Farril, Adonis Puentes, Bryan Lynch Latin Jazz Quartet, Emilio Santiago’s pristine voice, Ivan Lins and Hendrik Meurkens Samba Jazz Quartet will surely woo the audience with their sexiness. The audience should also prepare to be captivated by the performances of Eric Benet, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Toni Braxton, Roberta Gambarini and Jane Monheit. Those who wondered what The Rat Pack looked and sounded like must not miss impersonators of Sammy Davis Jr., James Dean and Frank Sinatra in Direct from Vegas The Rat Pack?.

Rufus featuring Sly Stone is certainly one of the highlights of AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010; it has been a tradition of Java Jazz Festival, presenting world’s music legends from various genres, this time from the genre soul and funk.

Don?t Want to Miss A Thing

Do you remember the song performed by super group Aerosmith in “Armageddon”? The visitors of AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010 must not miss the opportunity to catch the songwriter of the song’s performance.

Diane Warren is the most productive and hit-making composer. She has sold more songs than The Beatles, Robbie Williams and Elton Jon combined. In addition to “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”, Warren also wrote “Rhythm of the Night” (Gloria Estefan), “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” (Starship), “Blame It on the Rain” (Milli Vanili), “How Do I Live Without You” (LeAnn Rimes), “Un-Break My Heart” (Toni Braxton) and “Blue Eyes Blue” (Eric Clapton).

When she heard about Indonesia and Java Jazz Festival, Diane Warren wholeheartedly consented to perform her special project “Diane Warren’s Greatest Hits”. In addition to bringing along her latest find “Due Voci”, for the special project to be featured at AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010, Diane Warren will also be collaborating with a number of Indonesian and international artists to sing her hits.

Aside from Diane Warren, not to be missed at AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010, is the debut of duet Due Voci (Kelly Levesque and Tyler Hamilton). Diane Warren dubs the duet as “The Ultimate Romantic Duo”.

Also to debut at the Festival is 21-year-old Griffith Frank. Hailed as a combination of Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli (voice-wise), the coolness of Josh Groban and the good looks of Michael Buble, the 3-octave-range singer has won a number of competitions.

Tribute to Michael Jackson

Most certainly, those living on the face on this earth agree that the songs of Michael Jackson are divine and memorable. Indulge you ears and emotions; enjoy the songs of the King of Pop through jazz arrangements never heard before. The pioneer of the “Tribute to Michael Jackson” project is drummer Harvey Mason. AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010 will the first stage of the beautiful project.

This will be the first year of Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival at JIExpo Kemayoran. It is a beginning of a series of experience marveling at Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival, this year, in its sixth year.

Also a highlight of AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010 at its new venue, JIExpo Kemayoran, there will be a collaboration with FTV Indonesia (a subsidiary of FTV International). FTV is an international TV channel dedicating its broadcast on fashion and lifestyle news. The station is broadcasted in more by 200 countries.

FTV’s participation in AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010 will certainly emphasize how lifestyle is a part of music lovers’ lives. Due to collaborate elements of music and fashion, dubbed “Music and Fashion”, the project plans to treat music lovers with fashion shows dedicated to the street wear/urban look style which, in a way, is wearable by the visitors of AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010. The collaboration between fashion and music will then be broadcasted by FTV International to various corners of the world! FTV Indonesia will promote Indonesia’s pride of a jazz festival by putting out teaser clips prior to D-Day, followed by clips of “Fashion and Music”. The collaboration will surely expand the echo of AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010 to the corners of world.

The AXIS Experience

AXIS, the fastest growing national GSM and 3G operator in Indonesia, this year will again present the AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival. The company is for the second year in a row title sponsor this one of the largest jazz festivals in the world. AXIS has committed to a three year agreement as the title sponsor for AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival. In sponsoring the AXIS Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival, AXIS aims to underline its long-term commitment to support both international as well as Indonesian music industry and making music accessible for all.

In order to accommodate overwhelming responses we received last year, AXIS will again hold “Road to AXIS Jazz Stars” prior to the festival. It is a band competion to find talented jazz band who will get opportunity to perform on one of the AXIS Java Jazz Festival stages.

Most people conceive jazz as ‘complicated’. Its’ tunes, as do rhythms, continuously change. The musicians and singers of the genre often adopt a Quasimodo-like expression, not exactly a sight to behold. Nonetheless, that is jazz. It is full of expression.

The truth is no special trick is needed to enjoy a jazz music presentation, be it live or through a recording. Enjoying jazz is an individual appreciation. Interpreting its beauty is the ear of the beholder. For that reason, despite the numerous debates in relations to jazz as a music genre, as an art form or how it ought to be enjoyed, jazz is merely an outlet for freedom of expression. So, one may stick to one’s opinion as one wishes.

One thing for sure, jazz is an amalgamation of various musical approaches by diverse cultural backgrounds. As human beings evolve, influence and be influenced by changes from time to time, jazz also evolves. Jazz evolves through time, although some people remain devoted to its ‘genuine’ form, when it was first conceived.

Perhaps that is the cause of jazz popularity all over the world, its capability to be modified. Some people consider the ability to revel and comprehend jazz is a prestige of its own. It is no wonder that the space of Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival (JJF) is always packed solid.

The Jazz Music of Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival There is no end to the diversity of jazz music at Java Jazz Festival. Even after four years after it was first established in 2005, Java Jazz Festival still has yet to feature the various forms of jazz’s developments in Indonesia and the world. From year to year, the name Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival (known widely as Java Jazz Festival) continues to gain popularity, even amongst foreign musicians.
Over the years, more and more artists continue to stage their enthusiasm and desire to perform at Java Jazz Festival. However, Java Festival Production (the organizer of the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival and Jakarta International Soulnation Festival) could not always fulfill all these demands. One of the reasons is the limited capacity of the venue (Jakarta Convention Center, or JCC) and also limitation in scheduling (it’s only a 3-day event). In addition, too tight of a schedule might also impede the audience capability to enjoy the well-designed program.

A Tribute for Indonesia

In 2005, Indonesia was in the midst of a financial crisis. The tsunami disaster ravaging the western part of Indonesia further enhanced less than stellar publicity on Indonesia, especially in the international world.

Java Festival Production, however, carried on with its plan to hold the first Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival on 4, 5 and 6 March 2005. Carrying out mission “Bringing the World to Indonesia”, the Festival aims to draw different kind of perspective to Indonesia. The language used, Jazz.

In reality, the review from the international musicians and public in general who attended the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival was positive. They were satisfied and were not doubtful in stating their enthusiasm to return to the festival. A number of American musicians were even not shy in stating how different Indonesia was from the way it was portrayed by the international mass media.

In mid-2008, the financial crisis returns. This time, its effect is more widely-spread. For that reason, Java Festival Production is required to be more diligent in order to actualize the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2009, established as one of Indonesia’s method of diplomacy whilst at the same time presenting quality jazz music performances for jazz lovers in Indonesia and those from all around the world.

Since the beginning, Java Festival Production aims not to be an organizer of just a regular festival, but a world-class festival, as means to promote Indonesia. Despite the many obstacles, Java Festival Production continues to persevere to hold Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2009, a concrete contribution to the nation’s diplomacy to the world.

JAKARTA INTERNATIONAL JAVA JAZZ FESTIVAL 2009
On 6, 7 and 8 March 2009, Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival will be held for the fifth time. For Java Festival Production and the line-up of workers behind it the festival’s success, the fifth edition of the festival is a special occasion indeed as it was not an easy feat to organize a festival as sizeable as Java Jazz Festival.

Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2009 will be slightly different from the previous years. One of the special treats this year is lower ticket prices. This way, the festival becomes more accessible to all enthusiasts of Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival.

Java Festival Production also wishes to improve the quality of the performances by providing an opportunity for the performers to conduct proper sound check, to guarantee a maximum performance.

This year, Java Festival Production plans to feature, among few, Swing Out Sister, Brian McKnight, Roy Ayers, Ledisi, Simon Philips, New York Voices, Matt Bianco, Isao Suzuki, Dianne Reeves, Mike Stern, Oleta Adams, Peabo Bryson, dan Regina Carter at Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2009.

Start marking your calendars! Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival, 6, 7 and 8 March 2009. Take part in the Festival’s fifth celebration at Jakarta Convention Center. Attending the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival is a part of a lifestyle.

“Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2009, it’s a lifestyle.”
